How to recover data from uninitialized hard drive on Windows PC?

I'm trying to recover data from an old external hard drive I have and it still spins to life but it's shown as unknown and not initialized. I have some really important photos and files stored on that drive but now they remain inaccessible to me. Does anyone know how to recover data from my external hard drive? Can data recovery software help?

After recovering all your wanted files and photos, you can repair the uninitialized external hard drive by initializing and formatting if you still want to use that drive in the future:

  2. In Disk Management, right-click on your uninitialized drive and select Initialize Disk, then click OK to confirm the request.
  3. Right-click on your uninitialized external hard drive again, this time, select New Simple Volume.
  4. Choose the desired file system for your hard drive (FAT32 or exFAT is recommended), set a volume size, and assign a drive letter to the disk.
