Error: macOS can't repair the disk for a failed HDD on a MacBook Pro

The HDD on my wife's MacBook Pro has failed. In order to recover the photos on the drive, I took it out and connected it to my Mac externally. The drive is recognized on Mac. But when I tried to repair it in Disk Utility, First Aid failed and poped up the message saying "macOS can't repair the disk "untitled. You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can." When I open the files, they are empty. If I copy the files to another drive, the progress bar never changes. How can I restore the hundreds of photos on the drive? Any suggestion is appreciated!
