How Do I Get Permission to Delete Files On External Hard Drive?

I have switched to a Mac and now I don't have access to delete files on my Maxtor hard drive. When I follow previous instructions I am stumped at the drop-down for "Sharing & Permissions:" as it doesn't give me the option to do anything with them. It just says "You can only read". Thanks for any advice!
